![]() We show example images captured with a proof-of-concept gigapixel camera, demonstrating that high resolution can be achieved with a compact form factor and low complexity. Based on our analysis, we advocate for computational camera designs consisting of a spherical lens shared by several small planar sensors. We then show that resolution can be further increased when image priors are introduced. We derive an analytic scaling law showing that, for lenses with spherical aberrations, resolution can be increased beyond the aberration limit by applying a postcapture deblurring step. In the past, it has generally been accepted that the resolution of lenses with geometric aberrations cannot be increased beyond a certain threshold. However, the resolution of any camera is fundamentally limited by geometric aberrations. Higher resolution implies greater fidelity and, thus, greater accuracy when performing automated vision tasks, such as object detection, recognition, and tracking. The resolution of a camera system determines the fidelity of visual features in captured images. Our method paves the way to end-to-end design of a neural network and lens using the complete set of optical parameters within the full sensor field of view. We provide here interpretations of the joint optical and processing optimization results obtained with the proposed method in these simple cases. We validate our method for image restoration applications using three proves of concept of focus setting optimization of a given sensor. Using the gradient backpropagation framework for neural network optimization, any of the lens parameter can then be jointly optimized along with the neural network parameters. The proposed ray tracing model makes no thin lens nor paraxial approximation, and is valid for any field of view and point source position. Using a differential ray tracing (DRT) model, we simulate the sensor point-spread function (PSF) and its partial derivative with respect to any of the sensor lens parameters. In this paper we propose a new method to jointly design a sensor and its neural-network based processing. We compare our technique with other approaches that also aim to increase the DoF such as Wavefront coding. Then, by copying the high frequencies of the sharpest color onto the other colors, we show theoretically and experimentally that it is possible to achieve a sharp image for all the colors within a larger range of DoF. Comparing sharpness across colors gives an estimation of the object distance and therefore allows choosing the right set of digital filters as a function of the object distance. Typically, red is made sharp for objects at infinity, green for intermediate distances, and blue for close distances. ![]() ![]() ![]() Our lens design seeks to increase the longitudinal chromatic aberration in a desired fashion such that, for a given object distance, at least one color plane of the RGB image contains the in-focus scene information. In this paper we present an approach to extend the Depth-of-Field (DoF) for cell phone miniature camera by concurrently optimizing optical system and post-capture digital processing techniques.

The constant need to focus on the upkeep and performance will either make it or break it for you. RiMS Racing is an absolutely unique combo of engineer simulation and road race action and a breath of fresh air in the bike sim marketplace. At times there was a bit of framerate choppiness, and it isn’t the most detailed environmental experience around, but overall I found this to be a smooth, half decent looking game. ![]() There are also plenty of fully licensed tracks and roads to experience, ranging from the Circuit Paul Ricard and Silverstone to careering through the Victoria Desert. ![]() You have to manually input a series of button presses to achieve well-timed pitstops which is another idea I really liked. And in career mode that means you knacker your bike too so the stakes are raised even higher. Just like the real high-speed sport upon which it is based, a slight clip of a kerb or straying onto a verge can result in disaster. Anyone used to some of the more forgiving Milestone games will find it a big leap. Tyres wearing out? Expect to get some road rash, and soon. And you really feel the effects of disintegrating or damaged parts. The braking – both front and rear can be controlled – is spot-on. There is a great physics engine at play, and a real sense of weight to the motorbikes. So, you know how to look after your trusty steed – what is the actual racing aspect of RiMS like? The answer is: tough, realistic, and rewarding. You can even use your earned Team Credits to get someone to do your bike maintenance for you. Even the bike parts are licenced, for goodness sake. There are bags of licensed gear to pick up from recognisable companies like Alpinestars. Real bike enthusiasts, or those savant tech guys that enjoy seeing how machinery works will absolutely love this aspect of the game. This is a novel and original idea – and adds a sense of accomplishment once you have had a tinker. Replacing stuff is about buying (and selling) parts, and then actually fitting them yourself, using button commands to do so. This is a fantastic idea.īrake pads are the first thing you learn about. You can even get live action updates when pausing the action that tell you how the various bits of machinery are coping under the intense race conditions. As you race, your mount breaks down gradually. You have to look after it, maintaining it the same way you would in real life. In career mode, you choose a bike, which then becomes your eternal companion throughout the game. And the game explores each of them in explicit, almost overwhelming detail, as we will discover. Ducati Panigale V4 R, Kawasaki Ninja ZX10-RR, MV Agusta – you get the idea. The dev doesn’t waste your time with oodles of weak-ass bikes. The selections are instantly recognisable two wheeled behemoths, even to a layman in the street. As such there are just eight motorcycles to choose from. Unlike a lot of racing simulations, RaceWard Studio have decided that less is more. but that doesn’t mean I am not impressed. I will admit to being slightly turned off by how in-depth RiMS is. But then treating that bike with the same level of respect, nurture and husbandry as someone would dish out to a beloved horse. This is one for anyone who has dreamed of owning a high performance motorcycle. RiMs is as niche a motorcycle based videogame as you will ever encounter during your time on Earth. ![]() I figured that this would give me the true 940 mbps download speeds to my PC that the Gigablast service promised (and also delivered via a Cat 5 ethernet connection).Īfter installing one of the MoCA adapters at the receiving end (PC) and plugging in the ethernet cable to my PC, I anxiously decided to turn on MoCA in Cox's router config before installing the other adapter at the modem. Not completely satisfied, I decided to try MoCA, so I bought a pair of Motorola MoCA adapters - one for the head end (cable modem) and one for the receiving end (PC). This AX200 is a 802.11ax adapter and connects to Cox's modem and my network at 1.7 Gbps - although it obviously does not get 1.7 Gbps download speeds. Suddenly, I was seeing ~650 mbps download speeds on WiFi. ![]() So I upgraded the WiFi adapter to an Intel AX200 onboard adapter (which needed my motherboard's m.2 E-key slot). Unfortunately, I saw no improvement in (170 mbps download) speeds whatsoever when connecting to the Cox modem. My WiFi router is/was an Apple Airport Time Capsule, my WiFi adapter a Linksys WUSB6400 - the Time Capsule's WiFi is no longer used since I got the Cox Panoramic WiFi modem. Unfortunately, my PC is in a location where connecting it via a CAT 5 cable was/is not an option, so I always used an 802.11ac WiFi connection. I had been using Cox Preferred 150/10 mbps service for years but wanted to step up to 1 Gbps connectivity (or 940 mbps, as advertised). And be sure splitters are moca-compatible - I think, they have to support up to 1000 mhz or something like that.I recently upgraded to Cox Gigablast service. Trace the coax (if possible) to see where they lead, and make sure they're actually connected. So if you swear the setup looks correct and it still isn't working, that may be a factor. In some houses, that isn't always the case - they may be totally separate coax lines that have no direct connection. You have to be sure that the coax you're plugging into to send the signal is actually connected to the coax on the other side of the house, where you're wanting to switch the signal back to ethernet. One thing to keep in mind is, knowing the path of the coax can be tricky. ![]() And as someone pointed out, if that end point already does the conversion (a moca-enabled router, for example), then the second moca isn't necessary. It's really just a converter box for different signal types. The first moca switches the signal from ethernet to coax, the second one switches from coax back to ethernet. So going from a router that outputs via ethernet cable, through a coax cable connection, to another device that accepts only ethernet, the basic setup would be: ethernet into moca, coax out of moca to another moca, ethernet out of that second moca to the device. Think of them as nothing more than a means of converting a single that can run over coax into a signal that can run over ethernet, and vice versa. THANKS AGAIN!Ī lot of folks have already given great advice so I won't add on to that, but one thing that may help alleviate confusion is to simplify what the moca adapters do. This isn't my final setup, still waiting on a splitter that I'm going to use. I disconnected from there, attached both ends to the MOCA adapter, and it worked! Also installed a MOCA filter. I then traced that back to my room where there was 2 coax cables attached to eachother, the line coming in attached to the line going to the upstairs modem. What I did was check in my comms box for what the wire going into our house looked like. For those who are curious, the coax outlet that was in my room didn't actually lead to anything, I saw the other end of it in our cable box, disconnected. I was successfully able to get MOCA up and running. How would I set this up? Is this the best solution for me?ĮDIT: Thank you to everyone who commented here. I then came across another article outline I would only need to connect ethernet to the MOCA adapter in the living room (to my router) and the other one would take the Coax. One video I saw said I would need two MOCA adapters, both would need to have a Coax plugged into it for them to communicate. I've been searching online about how to set these up as running wiring down to the basement will be quite difficult. There is a Coax port in my room where the PC is and another Coax port in the living room where my wifi router is plugged in to. Recently moved in a new house and need to set up an wired connection to my PC. If you don't want guests on the course, then don't sell rounds on the web. Alexandre Aja doesn’t abandon any of the sweltery terrors that sting like scorpion bites yet injects more of Leatherface’s shadowy, tight-corners territory chases through houses or Michael hiding behind drying laundry lines. It’s one of the original film’s undeniable contributions to horror - the stark reminder that danger lurks anywhere, at any time. The remake is an immeasurable upgrade in texture and tone without ditching the idea that nobody is safe in the daylight. Shades of 2003’s The Texas Chainsaw Massacre are present in terms of adapting to more shark-smelling-blood horror structures, making Papa Jupiter’s ranks infinitely more intimidating predators. As 2000s horror trends go, The Hills Have Eyes leans into all the gruesome slasher tropes and hyper-adrenalized ferociousness that make for a more violent, in-your-face horror experience. Aja and Levasseur ditch the weirdly incestuous undertones between brother Bobby ( Dan Byrd) and sister Brenda ( Emilie de Ravin) while still allowing Bobby to make that inappropriate Freudian rattlesnake joke to his mother. The little tweaks stand out like Bob’s American flag fastened to his truck dragging a more contemporary Airstream or gnarlier cosmetic work on the faces of an uglier cannibal collective. Of course, Bob’s flock doesn’t know their accident is by nefarious means - but they will once Papa Jupiter’s ( Billy Drago) radioactive family starts hunting them for meals. After a shifty gas station attendant (played by Tom Bower) gives Bob fake shortcut instructions, they’re stranded between rocky mountain ranges after crashing thanks to Lizard’s ( Robert Joy) spike strip. Bob veers off course to soak in the scenic grandeur of New Mexico’s desert nothingness, where their sweaty-yet-idyllic vacation turns into a nightmare. Go big or go home, as the youths say (if they even say that anymore).īig Bob ( Ted Levine) and his wife Ethel ( Kathleen Quinlan) celebrate their silver wedding anniversary by driving from Cleveland to San Diego with their daughters, son-in-law, and granddaughter. Wes Craven contained his attack against an unfortunate road-trippin’ family to the crash site’s immediate area while Aja adventures into surrounding atomic suburbs and mineshafts. The family’s patriarch doubles down on his republican politics, ruthless villains are no longer just smudged with dirt to denote vagrancy, and America’s derelict treatment of bombing site fallouts haunts massive craters. Hordes consider Craven’s The Hills Have Eyes a sunbaked classic, and Aja rises to the challenge of ensuring that historical reverence isn’t sullied nor lazily recreated.Īlexandre Aja and co-writer Grégory Levasseur embellish every detail Craven could not and aim to expand their 2000s The Hills Have Eyes beyond prior-known boundaries. Aja understands remakes are an opportunity to build upon legacies and inject personal flourishes, ensuring that Craven’s namesake is honored yet never regurgitated without reason. Craven’s foundation is fundamental to Aja’s success, but it’s never a direct copycat. ![]() Backstories are juicier, the scares are scarier, and the gore is gorier with extreme extrapolation. It’s a wonderfully demented slice of horror history that I proudly own and rewatch, serving as a reminder that remakes aren’t enemies to their originals.Īlexandre Aja‘s 2006 revamp under Fox Searchlight Pictures takes what’s there and mutates pure evils with nuclear negligence. The bones are sturdy but licked cleaner of meatiness, while choppy editing or ’70s technological restraints limit what can be accomplished. Craven’s 1977 The Hills Have Eyes is a microcosmic take on roadside roving mongrels enacting extreme violence on innocent passersby, and also a prime example of works that could benefit from a remake. The sorely missed master of horror went on to hone his craft as a writer and director, tidying visions and coaxing stronger performances. Wes Craven‘s The Hills Have Eyesis a seminal “Sunny Scary” horror flick renowned for its cannibalistic hilltop clan, but it certainly presents as one of Craven’s earliest works. She doesn't want to go to prom cuz that's lame (I'm thinking she'll regret the decision to be too cool for prom fifteen years from now) and she forces him to buy her smoothies. Why would he hang out with them when he can make out with his way-out-of-his-league girlfriend Amy (the hilariously named Imogen Poots) or her douchey friend Mark (Dave Franco)? High school student Charley Brewster (Anton Yelchin) has risen in popularity due to another generous gift from the Puberty Fairy, leaving his geeky old friends Adam (Will Denton) and Ed (Christopher Mintz-Plasse and is there a film in the front half of this decade that doesn't have this guy in it?) behind in the dust. I’ve seen worse. And a collage of "Colin Farrell shirtless" Google Image results. Tennant & Yelchin are both very good and made a fairly mediocre vampire movie not feel like a complete waste of time. I’d have liked more humor & it dragged to begin with but it did really pick up once Tennant came into the picture more about halfway through. As a standalone film, it’s a fun vampire flick. If you like Yelchin & think this looks like your type of thing, give it a go. ![]() Therefore, I’m not going to waste my breath (er… fingers?) telling everyone to just watch the 1985 film. ![]() I’m not stupid, though – I know that younger people don’t like watching older movies so are very unlikely to seek out the original. Massive fail with the casting of these two, which was disappointing as everyone else was so good.įright Night (2011) is pointless but I suppose it’s not horrible. As for Christopher Mintz-Plasse, I can see why they chose him as Charley’s nerdy friend Ed but he’s so typecast now that he’s starting to get on my nerves & just ended up an annoying distraction. I don’t normally like him much anyway but he really didn’t have the charisma or the sexy charming thing going on that I expect from a vampire. Unfortunately, while the casting of these actors/actresses was spot on, I really disliked Colin Farrell as our main vampire baddie Jerry. He’s my favorite Doctor Who and I found him strangely attractive in his leather pants & eyeliner… Finally, I loved David Tennant as “vampire hunter” Peter Vincent. Anyway – She’s a cutie & the name Poots never fails to make me giggle. But that’s movies for you! The nerdy guys always get the hot girls. I also liked Toni Collette as his mother and had no problem with Imogen Poots as Charley’s girlfriend even though she’s too hot for him. He was uniquely talented and the absolute perfect choice to play Charley Brewster in Fright Night so I have no complaints there. I’ve liked Yelchin ever since Charlie Bartlett & was saddened by his untimely death. The only reason I decided to watch this was to see Anton Yelchin (R.I.P.). ![]() These signs seemed extraneous at the time… It’s ultimately forgettable but is luckily different enough from the 1985 film that it hasn’t damaged it in my mind. This Fright Night is just a bit “so what?”. Argh!!! That one actually damaged the franchise & I wish it didn’t exist. It at least didn’t completely piss me off & make me want to shout at my TV like that godawful A Nightmare On Elm Street remake. So, this is indeed yet another completely pointless remake but is it any worse than all the other pointless remakes? I guess it’s probably at the ever-so-slightly better end of things. But I’ll always be fond of it as, along with A Nightmare On Elm Street, it was my introduction to 80’s slasher-type flicks at a junior high spin the bottle party. I haven’t actually watched the original in years, though, which is why I’m not going to do a comparison review. I might as well start by pointing out the obvious to anyone who knows me: I prefer the original Fright Night and remakes piss me off. Martha Wash reflects on "It's Raining Men" during her Huffington Post cover story in 2011. Now you have the grandparents who love the song, the parents who love the song and the grandkids who love the song. The song is based in the house music genre produced by Sebo Reed. In 2012, the same lineup of the Weather Girls released "It's Raining Men - 2012" (stylized as "It's Raining Men 2K12"). This version features vocals by Dynelle Rhodes and then-newly added member Ingrid Arthur. In 2005, a live version of the song was released on the Weather Girls' ninth album "Totally Wild!". In 1993, a then-newly recorded version of "It's Raining Men" was released by the Weather Girls, now composed of Izora Armstead and her daughter Dynelle Rhodes, on their sixth album Double Tons of Fun (1993). Shortly after the release of the single, the Two Tons changed their name to the Weather Girls after much confusion by press and fans due to the duo introducing themselves as "the weather girls" in the introduction of the song. The single was then released for 7" single and 12" single in the United States on September 10, 1982. "It's Raining Men" was first released to dance club DJs in the United States in mid-1982. The Waters Sisters (Julia Waters-Tillman and Maxine Waters-Willard), Stephanie Spruill, and Zenobia Conkerite performed background vocals on the chorus of the song. That's why I kept saying no." The duo eventually recorded the song in ninety minutes after Jabara persistently pleaded with them to record the song. I just did not think people would buy it. I kept saying, 'It's raining men? Really? Are you kidding me?'. Wash recounted "We thought it was a crazy song - in fact, too crazy to record. Wash and Armstead of the Two Tons also dismissed the song. In 1982, the song was offered to the Two Tons (formerly known as Two Tons o Fun). The song was then offered to Diana Ross, Cher, and Barbra Streisand, all of whom declined it. However, as Shaffer later recalled, Summer had recently become a Born again Christian and rejected the song as "blasphemous". Paul Jabara and Paul Shaffer wrote the song over the course of one afternoon in 1979, intending it for Donna Summer, who had scored a hit with " Last Dance" (1978). "It's Raining Men" was co-written and co-produced by Paul Jabara At the 26th Annual Grammy Awards (1983), "It's Raining Men" received a nomination for Best R&B Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocals. "It's Raining Men" was a number-one dance hit in the United States, and reached the top ten in various other countries worldwide. Its lyrics describe an excitement and enjoyment of many different types of men. "It's Raining Men" is a Hi-NRG and post-disco song that incorporates elements of R&B, soul, and 1970s-style electronic dance music.
